Ratu Serimpak and The Land of The Cowboys of the East

Dear lovely readers,

The quaint town of Kota Belud lies about 70 kilometers, or an hour’s drive away, from Kota Kinabalu. Well-known for one of the most scenic districts in Sabah. Kota Belud is a wonderful tapestry of cultures and customs; embracing those of the Bajau Muslim majority and smatterings of the Kadazan Dusun and Irranun mores. For many centuries, Kota Belud has played an imperative role as the cultural hub of Northern Borneo. It is mostly known for its vivacious 'tamu' and unique handicrafts. Kota Belud is also the gateway to the beautiful Mantanani Island.

Kota Belud, “The Land of The Cowboys of the East", has successfully organized the first Tamu Besar from September 24th to 25th in 2005. Tamu is the local language for "Open Market". 'Tamu Besar' means "Big Open Market". It is a place where all farmers, fishermen, and vendors gathers weekly to sell their products. You can find all sort of products here such as foods, drinks, vegetables, fruits, clothing, seafood, handicraft and many other daily use items.

Tamu Besar Kota Belud is one of the biggest events on Sabah calendar. This year, Tamu Besar falls on 26 to 27th of October. During this 2-day event, there are programs such as singing competition, beauty pageant, cultural dance, cow racing and horse racing.

The traditional costumes of Bajau women are very distinctive among the indigenous people. Usually yellow and red are the primary colors. So, another highlight of the Tamu Besar is the Ratu Serimpak (Serimpak Beauty Queen Contest). 'Serimpak' is an ornate headpiece worn by Bajau and Iranun women. The dangling attachment to the Serimpak is known as 'Garigai.' The contest rule is very simple. There is no oral challenge. All the contestants walked slowly on the stage, trying to show their costumes in different graceful gestures. Whoever got the most beautiful display and prettiest face will win.
